These pairings result from an interest in sketches and fragments made as studies for large paintings during the 15th-17th centuries in Europe. I became especially interested in studies for paintings that were destroyed, stolen or lost. The complexity of visual subjects I found myself photographing led me to create pairs in which each image can alter the interpretation of it's companion. As with the historical drawn studies, the actual structure of the final project and the scope of the narrative are ambiguous, so that each set of images only reveal hints of a potentially larger context.
